MOT, road tax and insurance dates explained

The important dates to record for each car and where to confirm them.

Three dates often sit at the centre of car admin: the MOT expiry, road tax position and the end date on your insurance record. Keeping them together gives you a clear view, but official sources remain the final reference.

MOT

Record the expiry date and keep the latest test result or certificate with the car. If there are advisories, add them to the maintenance list so they are not forgotten.

Road tax

Keep the renewal date or direct-debit schedule visible. Vehicle tax does not transfer with the car when ownership changes.

Insurance record

Save the current document and record its start and end dates. Keep this separate from maintenance records so it is easy to find when you need it.

Always confirm current status with the relevant authority or provider.
