How to organise your car records
A simple system for keeping dates, documents and maintenance records attached to the right car.
Car paperwork becomes much easier when every record has a consistent home. Start with one folder or digital garage for each vehicle, then organise information by date and purpose.
Start with the essentials
- Registration and basic vehicle details.
- Current mileage and the date it was recorded.
- MOT and road tax dates.
- Your current insurance record.
- Service and repair history.
Attach documents to events
Keep a receipt or document beside the service, repair or check it relates to. Record the date and mileage too. That makes the history useful when planning future work or passing the car on.
Review it regularly
A quick monthly check is enough for most people. Confirm the nearest dates and add any work completed since your last review.
